How to Troubleshoot when Your Heat Shuts Off

What to Do If Your Heat Shuts Off

If your heating system shuts off unexpectedly on a cold day and won't come back on, please take a few simple steps before you call Deitch Energy LLC. You might be able to get the system going again on your own.

  • If you have a programmable thermostat, check the battery.
  • Check the thermostat - Be sure it is set high enough to call for heat.
  • Locate the emergency shut off switch. It is usually located near the basement steps or next to your heating system. Make sure the switch is in the ON position.
  • Check for any blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers in your electrical supply panel. A breaker switch is tripped when it is moved slightly from the ON position
  • Look at the oil tank to be sure there is sufficient oil.

If the home has a steam boiler, check the water level and refill if necessary.

If all the steps above have been completed successfully and the system remains off, they should press the red reset button on the burner relay ONCE ONLY!

If the burner does not start or fails to stay running at that point, call us at 860.728.5431 and we'll take care of the problem!
